5th
French forces invaded Algeria. The conquest of Algeria took almost 70 years a time during which it is speculated that a third of its population died as a direct result of the war. Algeria regained its independence in 1962 after an 8 year long struggle against the French.

French painter, Camille Pissarro, was born in Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas, an island in the Caribbean Sea. He is widely considered as one of the leading French Impressionist painters of all time.
