A catastrophic earthquake destroys most of the city of Caracas, Venezuela.
April
30th
The Territory of Orleans became the 18th US state under the name Louisiana.
June
18th
The United States declared war on Great Britain.
July
12th
The United States invaded Canada at Windsor, Ontario.
September
15th
The French army of Napoleon reached the Kremlin in Moscow. Though Napoleon had hoped that the taking of Moscow would ultimately bring him victory in his Russian campaign, it never did. The Russians, under the orders of Alexander I, had retreated past Moscow and had ordered the city burned. At the end of the campaign Napoleon retreated in defeat with approximately only 40,000 of his initial 650,000 soldiers.

18th
A huge fire in the city of Moscow destroyed most of the city's housing and churches.
