American boxer, Mike Tyson, was convicted of raping a Miss Black America contestant.
March
13th
A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 struck eastern Turkey resulting in the death of more than 500 people.
March
17th
A suicide bomber detonated a car packed with explosives at the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The blast killed 29 people and injured more than 200.
April
9th
The UK's conservative party, under the leadership of John Major, won an unprecedented fourth victory in the UK's general election.
April
12th
Euro Disney opened in Marne-la-Vallee, France.

20th
British comedian, Benny Hill, died at the age of 68. He was best known for his television programme, The Benny Hill Show, which has enjoyed view ship that reaches into the billions.

The first McDonald's restaurant opened in Beijing, China.

29th
Massive riots took place in the US city of Los Angeles, California, following the acquittal of police officers that had been charged with the beating of Rodney King. The riots lasted three days and cost the lives of 54 people.

Wolfenstein 3D was released. This was the first-ever first-person shooter computer game which has spawned hundreds if not thousands of similar games.

American actor, Robert Reed, died at the age of 60. He is best remembered for his role in the popular TV series, 'The Brady Bunch'.

22nd
Legendary TV persona, Johnny Carson, hosted 'The Tonight Show' for the last time. He was the show's host for 30 years.
July
22nd
American actor, Wayne McLaren, died at the age of 51. He was known for having portrayed the Marlboro Man in the Marlboro cigarette commercials. He was an avid smoker and died of lung cancer.

31st
A Thai Airways passenger plane crashed into a mountain north of Kathmandu, Nepal, resulting in the death of 113 people.
August
18th
Wang Laboratories filed for bankruptcy. During the 1980s it had revenues in excess of $3 billion USD per year and employed more than 30000 people.
September
12th
American actor, Anthony Perkins, died at the age of 60. He is most remembered for his part as Norman in Psycho.
October
2nd
During a riot in the Carandiru prison in Sao Paolo, Brazil, the military police was sent to quell the rioting prisoners. At the end of the day 111 prisoners were dead, 102 of which were killed by the military police.

A cargo plane of the Israeli, El Al company, crashed into a block of apartment buildings in Amsterdam resulting in the death of 43 people, 38 of which were on the ground.
November
3rd
Democratic candidate Bill Clinton defeated Republican George H.W. Bush as well as independent candidate Ross Perot.
November
11th
After a controversial vote, The Church of England, voted to allow women to become priests.
November
24th
A China Southern Airlines passenger jet crashed, resulting in the death of all 141 people on board.
December
3rd
A Greek oil tanker, carrying 80,000 tonnes of crude oil, run aground near La Coruna, Spain, spilling much of its cargo.
