US president, Richard Nixon, announced to the world that a peace deal had been reached in Vietnam, effectively ending the war.

Israeli fighter jets shot down a Libyan Airlines passenger jet, resulting in the death of 108 people.

28th
The hard rock musical group, KISS, was created. It was one of the most recognizable and successful hard rock bands in history.
March
5th
Two Spanish passenger jets collided in mid-air, resulting in the death of 68 people.

10th
Czech fashion model, Eva Herzigova, was born in Litvinov. She was one of the most popular fashion models of the 1990's. She is also know for her marriage to Tico Torres, the drummer of the music band Bon Jovi.

Rock band, Pink Floyd, releases their The Dark Side of the Moon album.

The soap opera "The Young and the Restless" debuted on the CBS channel. Till 2006 there have been over eight thousand episodes aired.

The last US soldiers were evacuated from Vietnam.

The World Trade Center in New York, officially opened.

Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, died at the age of 92 in Vauvenargues, southern France.

Brazilian football player, Roberto Carlos da Silva, was born Sao Paulo.

The United States launched its first space station, Skylab. It remained in orbit between 1973 and 1979 at which time it re-entered the atmosphere and was destroyed.
June
3rd
A Soviet supersonic passenger jet (Tupolev Tu-144), crashed near Goussainville, France. 14 people died in the crash. which was the first ever of a supersonic passenger aircraft.

Bob Marley and the Wailers released the Reggae album "Exodus". In 1999 Time magazine named it the album of the century.

John Paul Getty III, the grandson of billionaire J. Paul Getty, was kidnapped in Rome, Italy.

Snipers opened fire on a crowd that was awaiting the return of Juan Peron in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 13 people were killed and more than 300 were injured.

American actress, Juliette Lewis, was born in Los Angeles, California.

10th
The Bahamas gained full independence.

A Brazilian passenger flight crashed near Paris, resulting in the death of 123 peopl onboard. 11 people survived the crash.

Greek athlete, Konstantinos Kenteris, was born in Mytilene. He was the gold medallist in the 2000 Sydney Olympics but failed to run in the 2004 Athens Olympic games after failing to attend a drug test.

Italian football player, Christian Vieri, was born in Bologna. Early in his life his family moved to Australia where he grew up.

American, Monica Lewinsky, was born in San Francisco. She became famous worldwide for her affair with President of the United States Bill Clinton while she worked at the White House in 1995-1996.

Soviet Mars 5 space probe was launched. It was the fifth of a series of Soviet probes that were designed and launched to gather information from the planet mars.

British actress, Kate Beckinsale, was born in London, England.

American actor, Stephen Dorff, was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He is most known for his part as the evil vampire Deacon Frost in the hit horror film Blade.

A Delta Air Lines passenger plane crashed while landing in at Logan Airport, Boston, Massachusetts. 89 people died in the crash.

Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista, died in Guadalamina, Spain.

British writer, J. R. R. Tolkien, died at the age of 81. He is best remembered as the author of the immensely popular books, The Hobbit, and its sequel The Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the rings is one of the most widely read books in human history.

Italian footballer, Fabio Cannavaro, was born in Naples, Italy. He was the captain of the Italian team that won the 2005 FIFA world cup.

23th
Chilean writer, Pablo Neruda, died at the age of 69. He was the winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize for literature and is considered as one of the greatest poets of all time. He was a left leaning ideologist and strong admirer of Russia's Joseph Stalin.

Juan Peron, returned to power in Argentina after being in exile for 18 years following a military coup in Argentina.

The ITT (International Telephone and Telegraph) headquarters building in New York City was bombed in protest of the company's involvement in the September 11 1973 coup d'etat in Chile. ITT owned 70% of the Chilean Telecommunications Company as well as local newspaper and directly funded the faction which conducted the coup. ITT was a huge conglomerate of companies that existed up until 1989, when it was broken apart.

Canadian actress, Neve Campbell, was born in Ontario, Canada. She became famous after her role in the widely successful horror film, Scream.

The Yom Kippur War started as 80,000 Egyptian troops crossed the Suez Canal.

Vice President of the United States Spiro Agnew resigned after he was charged with federal income tax evasion.

The Sydney Opera House opened. It is one of the most famous 20th century buildings as well as one of the most famous performing arts halls in the world.

The television series, The Six Million Dollar Man, premiered on the ABC channel. It ran for 5 years and enjoyed worldwide success (known in many other countries as the Bionic Man). The show also produced the also successful spin-off called The Bionic Woman.

The Yom Kippur war between Syria and Israel, officially ends after a UN imposed cease-fire goes into effect.

After the break of the Watergate scandal, US President Richard Nixon, utters his famous 'I am not a crook' quote to the press.

Students in Athens begin an uprising against the military Junta in Athens.
December
20th
Spanish Prime Minister, Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, was assassinated in Madrid. He was widely seen as the successor of dictator Francisco Franco. His assassination helped hasten Spain's move towards democracy.
