American director, Cecil B. DeMille, died at the age of 78. He was one of the most successful directors of the first part of the 20th century. He directed the very first movie ever made by Paramount Pictures.

German actress, Nastassja Kinski, was born in Berlin. She is the daughter of actor Klaus Kinski.

Disney's animated classic, Sleeping Beauty, was released.

16th
Fidel Castro was sworn in as Premier of Cuba after the overthrow of president Fulgencio Batista on January 1. Castro was 32 years of age at the time.

American musician and actor, Ice-T, was born in Los Angeles. He is considered as one of the most influential rappers and an accomplished actor.

American actor, Aidan Quinn, was born in Rockford, Illinois. He is most known for his participation in the hit films, Michael Collins and Legends of the Fall.

English actor, Sean Bean, was born in Shefield, England. Though he has been acting for many years, he became famous worldwide after his role in the first part of the Lord of The Rings trilogy, as the character Boromir.

American actor, Vincent D'Onofrio, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He came into fame after landing the role of Private Leonard "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence in Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film, Full Metal Jacket.

Scottish singer, Jim Kerr, was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He is most known as the lead singer and lyricist of Scottish band Simple Minds.

American actor, Kevin Spacey, was born in South Orange, New Jersey. He has won two academy awards, one for best supporting and one for best, actor.

American model and actress, Rosanna Arquette, was born in New York City.

17th
American cult leader, David Koresh, was born in Houston, Texas. He was the leader of the Branch Davidians religious sect, and proclaimed himself to be the final prophet. In 1993 the FBI laid siege on the Branch Davidian ranch at Waco, Texas. The siege ended up with the burning of the ranch and the death of 79 members of the cult, including Koresh himself.

While visiting the United States, Nikita Khrushchev, was not allowed to visit Disneyland. The reason cited was issues of security.

14th
Australian actor, Errol Flynn, died a the age of 50. He was one of the favourite holywood stars of the 30's and 40's and stared mostly in flamboyant action roles. He died of a heart attack and was later accused of having been a Nazi spy and sympathizer.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, opened to the public. It is one of the most famous is a modern art museums in the world which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Bolivian politician, Evo Morales, was born in Orinoca, Bolivia. He was allected to president of Bolivia in 2005 and is considered the first member of Bolivia's indigenous indian head of state.

Canadian musician, Bryan Adams, was born in Kingston, Ontario.

American actress, Sean Young, was born in Kentucky. She most known for her participation in the cult movies, Blade Runner and Dune.

American actor, Judd Nelson, was born in Maine. He is best known for his part in the 1980's cult movie, The Breakfast Club.

American actor, Val Kilmer, was born in Los Angeles, California. He is a highly successful actor who became a star when he was cast as the lead of the spoof comedy, Top Secret, in 1984.
