British actress, Vanessa Redgrave, was born in London. She is a successful film and stage actress and the mother of fellow actress, Natasha Richardson.

Russian chess master, Boris Spassky, was born in Leningrad. In 1969 he became the world champion, a position he held for four years before loosing to Bobby Fischer.
March
15th
American writer, H. P. Lovecraft, died at the age of 46. He was the author of fantasy, horror and science fiction novels and the creator of the Cthulhu Mythos (although the term was not coined by him). Although his novels did not receive a wide audience during his lifetime, they have persisted throughout the 21st century as lasting bestsellers and have attained the status of classics in the genre.

A massive explosion at a school in New London, Texas, resulted in the death of more than 300 people, most of which were students. The blast occurred due to natural gas leak and was one of the worst school related tragedies in history.

Actor and director, Warren Beatty, was born in Richmond, Virginia. Apart from his film endeavours, he is an very active political activist and supporter of the Democratic party if the United States.

First ever appearance of Warner Brother's Daffy Duck in the animated clip "Porky's Duck Hunt".

Philippine politician, Joseph Estrada, was born in Manila. He stared in over 100 movies produced in the Philippines, before entering the political arena in the late 60's. He served as president of the Philippines between 1998 and 2000. He was the first Philippine President to be impeached when charges of corruption plagued his administration.

American actor, Jack Nicholson, was born in New York City. He has appeared in a multitude of films over his career and has been awarded 2 academy awards. His first major break in the film industry was that of the movie Easy Rider.

26th
The town of Guernica, Spain was bombed by the German Luftwaffe, during the Spanish civil war. This is the event that inspired Pablo Piccasso to paint one of the worlds most known paintings, The Guernica. The attack was carried out by Nazi forces that had been contributed to Francisco Franco's forces by the Germans. It was the first ever aerial bombardment of a civilian target.

The German zeppelin, Hindenburg, caught fire and was destroyed while it was docking with the dock at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Zeppelin originally was designed to be filled helium, but due to an embargo on helium it was filled with the highly flammable gas, hydrogen. 36 died in the accident.

The San Francisco landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge, opened to pedestrian traffic. Construction began in January 1933.

Edward, The Duke of Windsor married Wallis Simpson. His relationship and subsequent marriage was the reason he had abdicated from the throne of the United Kingdom. He was king for a little less than 10 months.

The United States instituted the Marihuana Tax Act. It is widely considered as the first act towards the criminalization of Marihuana in the United States.

5th
Luncheon meat was introduced into the market by the Hormel Foods Corporation. The brand name of the first ever such product was, Spam, which is the name that is now synonymous with the product in general.

American actor, Ned Beatty, was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a popular support actor who has appeared in over 100 films and is most known for his part as Lex Luthor's henchman, Otis, in Superman.

American comedian, Bill Cosby, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He starred in one of the 1980's most successful television shows, The Cosby Show. He was the highest paid entertainer in America for many years.

American actor, Dustin Hoffman, was born in Los Angeles, California.

27th
The Toyota Motor Corporation was founded as a division of the of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works company (which at the time was a machine manufacturing company).

Toyota Motors became an independent company. It had previously been the automobile division of the of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works company.

New Zealand race driver, Bruce McLaren, was born in Auckland. He was one of the most successful race drivers of his generation who was one of the dominant drivers of the Canadian-American Challenge racing competition. He was also the founder of Team McLaren which has been one of the most successful in Formula One championship history.

French, Pierre de Coubertin, died at the age of 74. He is credited with the modern day revival of the Olympic Games.

J. R. R. Tolkien's book, The Hobbit, was first published. It has since become one of the most widely read books in history.

The last Balinese tiger was killed. It was a species of tiger found solely on the small Indonesian island of Bali.

The Lincoln Tunnel opened for traffic in New York City. The tunnel is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long, running under the Hudson River, connecting New Jersey to Manhattan.
