German mathematician, Georg Cantor, died at the age of 73. He is considered as one of the great mathematicians of the 19th century. He developed the 'Set Theory'.

American actor, John Forsythe, was born in New Jersey. He was a popular television actor whose career spanned four decades and enjoyed such prominent roles as Charlie in the popular serie, Charlie's Angels and Blake Carrington in the popular 1980s soap opera, Dynasty.

The first case of Spanish flu was recorded. It was the beginning of a pandemic which according to various sources killed more than 90 million people around the world. It was called Spanish flu only because it had received more media attention in Spain, which at the time was not involved in the First World War.

American writer, Mickey Spillane, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was the author of several popular crime novels and is most remembered for his creation of the fictitious detective character, Mike Hammer.

American businessman, Sam Walton, was born in Oklahoma. He was the founder of the retail giant Wal-Mart company and rated as the richest man in the world.

German airplane pilot, Manfred von Richthofen, died during an aerial engagement of the First World War. He was nicknamed "The Red Baron" and is considered to this day as of the greatest fighter pilots of all time.

The Sedition Act was passed by the US Congress. Under the terms of the act, criticism of the government became a jailable offence. It was repealed in 1921.

The Democratic Republic of Georgia was established after the Russian Revolution of 1917 ended the Tsarist rule in Russia. It would only stay independent for a short while as it was invaded 3 years later by Soviet forces, only to become part of the Soviet Union.

A train wreck in Indiana, USA, resulted in the death of 86 people.

101 people were killed in the worst train accident in the history of the United States. The accident occurred when an inbound local train collided with an outbound express.

Swedish film director, Ingmar Bergman, was born in Uppsala, Sweden. He is widely acknowledged as one of the best film directors of the 20th century.

Emperor Nicholas II of Russia as well as all members of his immediate family, and staff were executed on the orders of the Bolshevik Party.

Battle of Amiens ended with a decisive allied victory. It is considered as one of the most important battles of the First World War.

Bolshevik revolutionary leader Moisei Uritsky was assassinated.

5th
French pilot, Roland Garros, was shot down and killed during an engagement in World War I. The French Open tennis tournament is named in his honor.

American actress, Rita Hayworth, was born in Brooklyn, New York. She was the female sex symbol of the 1940s and is considered by many as the first female superstar. She died as a result of Alzheimer's disease.

Czechoslovakia gained its independence from the Austro-Hungarian empire.

4th
The German Revolution began after 40,000 sailors took over the port of Kiel. Also known as November Revolution the revolution took place during the end of the first world war and right after its end and in the end culminated with the overthrow of the Kaiser and the establishment of the Weimar Republic which lasted until the ascend of Adolf Hitler in 1933.

The first world war officially ended as Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies aboard a rail road car outside of Compiegne in France.

Latvia declared its independence from Russia. It achieved independence in 1921 and was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1944, an occupation which lasted until the complete withdrawal of Russian troops in 1994.

Transylvania united with Romania.
