Russian ballerina, Marina Semenova, was born in Saint-Petersburg. She was the first Soviet-trained prima ballerina and one of the famous of the 20th century. In 2003, the Bolshoi Theatre celebrated the 95th birthday of Semenova.

American football coach, Paul Brown, was born in Norwalk, Ohio. He is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest American Football coaches in history.

American politician, Lyndon B. Johnson, was born in Stonewall, Texas. He was the 36th president of the United States, who succeeded to the presidency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The island of Crete revolted against Ottoman occupation and joined Greece.

Albanian dictator, Enver Hoxha, was born in Gjirokaster, Albania.He was the leader of Albania from the end of the second world war, up until 1981 and was one of the last remaining believers of Stalinism, a belief which led to Albania's international isolation for many decades.

An earthquake hit Messina, Sicily resulting in the death of more than 140,000 people. It is considered as the strongest earthquake to have ever hit the continent of Europe.
