French composer, Hector Berlioz, died at the age of 65. He was a famous French romantic composer best known for the Symphonie fantastique.
June
27th
Lithuanian-born anarchist and feminist, Emma Goldman, was born in Kaunas, Lithuania. She was one of the most prolific supporters of the anarchistic ideology and a staunch feminist.
September
22nd
Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold premiered in Munich.
November
4th
The first issue of the scientific journal Nature was published. The magazine is still in publication today (2006) and is one of the oldest magazines in print today.

17th
The Suez Canal, which links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, was officially opened with a spectacular ceremony.
December
31st
French painter, Henri Matisse, was born in Le Cateau-Cambresis, France. He is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century.
