16th
Gallaudet University was established in Washington, DC. It was the first school offering advanced education of the deaf and is still the world's only university in which all courses are designed to accommodate the deaf and hard of hearing.

An Earthquake in Tokyo, Japan killed over 100,000 people.

The first elevator was installed at 488 Broadway, New York City by Elisha Otis.
September
13th
American entrepreneur, Milton S. Hershey, was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was the founder of what is still today one of the largest confectionery business in the world and a name that is synonymous with chocolate.
October
24th
The football club, Sheffield F.C., was founded in Sheffield, England. It is one of the worlds first football clubs and the oldest one still in existence.
