	March 16th	Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter was published for the first time.
	March 18th	American Express was founded by Henry Wells & William Fargo. It was initially an express money order company.
	April 4th	Los Angeles officially became a city.
	April 15th	The city of San Francisco was incorporated.
	September 9th	California was admitted as the 31st US state.
