British forces occupied the island of Hong Kong. Under the treaty of Nanking the island was officially ceded to Great Britain in 1842. On July 1997 the United Kingdom's rule over Hong Kong ended, at which time governorship of the island back to China. |

French painter, Pierre Auguste Renoir, was born Limoge. He was one of the a leading artists of the Impressionist movement. In 1990 one of his paintings, Bal au moulin de la Galette, Montmartre, was sold for 78 million US dollars. |

US president William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia, He was the first US president to die in office. He was president for only a month. |
