Mardi Gras was celebrated for the first time in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mardi Gras is the last day of the carnival and it was first celebrated on the year 1703 in in Mobile, Alabama, USA.

The University of Toronto was founded.

German composer, Ludwig van Beethoven, died at the age of 57. Even though he had began loosing his hearing at his early twenties, he was still able to produce his musical masterpieces.

English inventor, John Walker, invented the friction match.

23th
Greek revolution hero, George Karaiskakis, died after being wounded in a skirmish with Ottoman forces in the area of Faliron.
July

Slavery was abolished in the US state of New York.
September
21st
Joseph Smith, Jr., an American religious leader, claimed that the angel Moroni gave him a record of gold plates, which he translated into 'The Book of Mormon'. He founded the 'Latter Day Saint movement', which gave rise to Mormonism.
October
20th
The Naval battle of Navarino took place in which a combined Turkish and Egyptian fleet was destroyed by an allied British, French, and Russian naval force. The battle took place in the port of Navarino of Pylos, Greece. The battle marked the end of the Greek Liberation War and the affirmation of independence of modern Greece.
