In the year 1816
February
20th
Gioachino Rossini's opera, The Barber of Seville, premiered at the Teatro Argentina in Rome. Although the first performance met with severe criticism and jeering, the second performance was met with much better results. It has become one of the most performed opera's of all time.

21st
English author, Charlotte Bronte, was born in Yorkshire, England. She was the author of one of the most famous novels of all time, Jane Eyre, which she had published under the pseudonym Currer Bell.

9th
Argentina declared its independence from Spain.
December
11th
Indiana became the 19th U.S. state.
