A law was passed in New York which marked the beginning of the abolishion of slavery in the state.
July
15th
The Rosetta Stone was discovered in the Egyptian village of Rosetta, by French Captain Pierre-Francois Bouchard. It was created in 196 BC and is considered as one of the most significant archaeological finds of modern times as it contained the same text in two Egyptian language scripts (hieroglyphic and demotic) and in classical Greek, thus allowing for the translation of the first which had been previously impossible.

Napoleon I of France defeated an army of Ottoman Turks, under the command of Mustafa Pasha, at Aboukir in Egypt.

American politician and revolutionary, George Washington, was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was one of the most instrumental figures in America's war for independence and the first president of the United States.
