February
4th
George Washington was elected to a second term as President of the United States by the US Electoral College.
February
29th
Italian composer, Gioacchino Rossini, was born in Pesaro. He was a popular composer of opera and chamber music. His most known piece of work is the comic opera, The Barber of Seville.
August
10th
King Louis XVI of France was arrested and taken into custody by French revolutionaries. His arrest marked (and subsequent execution, months later) the end of absolutism in France.
September
2nd
During the period of the French Revolution, rampaging mobs kill three Roman Catholic Church bishops and more than two hundred priests in what has been known in history as the September Massacres.
November
10th
Construction of the White House began.
December
11th
Following the break of the French revolution, King Louis XVI was put on trial for treason. He was found guilty and was executed on 21 January 1793.
