January
19th
Scottish inventor, James Watt, was born in Greenock, Scotland. He invented the steam engine.
June
14th
French mathematician, Charles Augustin de Coulomb, was born in Angouleme. He was one of the leading scientists in the field of electricity and electromagnetism. The unit of electrical charge, the coulomb, is named after him.
September
16th
German physicist, Gabriel Fahrenheit, died at the age of 50. The Fahrenheit scale of temperature was named after him and was used around the world long before the Celsius scale. Currently the USA and Jamaica use the Fahrenheit scale.
