Greece became the European basketball champion for the second time in its history.
1996 
The last of the Magdalen Asylums was closed in Ireland. Under the orders of the Roman Catholic Church the Asylums were originally created to help women who had turned to prostitution due to their background. In time and with the guidance of the church these institutions were turned to prison like establishments which to this day are another dark chapter in the history of the Catholic Church and an example of human cruelty.
1978 
A Pacific Southwest Airlines passenger jet collided in mid-air with a small Cessna plane, causing it to crash in San Diego, California. All 135 passengers died in the crash, as well as the 2 passengers of the Cessna plane and seven people on the ground.
1972 
The Norwegian people rejected membership to the European Union.
1970 
The television series 'The Partridge Family' premiered on the ABC channel, it run for a period of four years and enjoyed great success with family audiences around the world.
1969 
English actress, Catherine Zeta-Jones, was born in Swansea, Wales. She is married to actor Michael Douglas, with whom she has two children.
1968 
American actor and singer, Will Smith, was born in Philadelphia. He first gained fame when he starred in the 1990 sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. When the show ended in 1996 he starred in two of the most successful films of the 90's, Independence Day and Men in Black, which catapulted his career to absolute stardom.
1965 
American basketball player, Scottie Pippen, was born in Hamburg, Arkansas. He is considered as one of the great NBA players of the 90's, who was overshadowed by the talent of Michael Jordan.
1962 
The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria is formally proclaimed after the Algerian revolutionary war against France.
1952 
American actor, Christopher Reeve, was born in New York City . He was renowned for his portrayal of Superman in four motion pictures. On May 27, 1995 he was paralyzed from the neck down after a horse riding accident which left him quadriplegic.
1951 
American actor, Mark Hamill, was born in Oakland, California. He is best known for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy.
1944 
American actor and producer, Michael Douglas, was born in New Jersey, USA. He acquired fame through his participation in the television series 'The Streets of San Francisco' which ran between 1972 and 1976.
