Nine US Navy destroyer ships run aground off the California coast during an exercise. Seven of the ships were lost in the biggest peacetime naval disaster of America.
A powerful hurricane hits the city of Galveston, Texas killing approximately 8,000 people.
In England the first Football League matches ever are played.
Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak, was born in Nelahozeves near Prague. He is considered as one of the great composers of the late 19th century.
Michelangelo's sculpture, David, was unveiled in the city of Florence. It took Michelangelo over 3 years to complete the statue.
King Richard I of England was born. He led the third crusade to free Jerusalem, a goal never achieved, although he was able to negotiate the permitance of unarmed christian muslims into the city.
