British politician, Robin Cook, died at the age of 61. He was the most public and highest ranking member of the British cabinet to oppose the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He resigned over the issue and his resignation speech is reportedly the only speech to ever receive a standing ovation in the history of the British parliament.

In an effort to revitalize the ailing computer company, Apple, Microsoft bought $150 million worth of shares of its financially troubled former rival.

A Korean Air passenger jet crashed into the jungle of Guam, resulting in the death of 228 people.
1973 
Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista, died in Guadalamina, Spain.
1962 
Jamaica became an independent country. It was previously a colony of the United Kingdom.
1945 
The nuclear bomb, Little Boy, was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan.
1928 
American artist, Andy Warhol, was born in Forest City, Pennsylvania. Warhol was one of the founders of the Pop Art movement during the 1950s. He died in his sleep from a sudden heart attack after a routine gallbladder surgery at New York Hospital.
1917 
American actor, Robert Mitchum, was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was one of the actors who established the concept of the antihero.
1911 
American actress, Lucille Ball, was born in Jamestown, New York. She was most known for her part in the highly successful television series, I Love Lucy.
1881 
Biologist and pharmacologist, Alexander Fleming, was born in Lochfield, Scotland. He is most known for his discovery of the antibiotic penicillin for which he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
1825 
Bolivia gained its independence from the rule of Spain.
1809 
English poet, Alfred Tennyson, was born in Lincolnshire. He is one of the most popular English language poets in history.
1660 
Spanish painter, Diego Velazquez, died at the age of 60. He is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the contemporary baroque period.
1538 
The city of Bogota, Colombia was founded by Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada.
